Tactical Urbanism projects are small scale efforts to make the city better incrementally. For Atlanta Streets Alive, we will be re-purposing Highland Avenue, from North Avenue to Ponce de Leon Ave, to be a more engaging, enjoyable and comfortable destination for community activity. Going beyond the intent of streets alive to re-image streets as places for people, CNU Atlanta, Georgia Conservancy, and Georgia ASLA want to identify changes to the design of Highland Ave that can make it safer and more lively for all users driving, walking, biking and using public transit. Our main efforts will be focused on re-purposing on-street parking spaces and other elements along the street as gathering places for people. These strategies will include cafe seating, lawn chairs, temporary street trees, and other fun activities. Additionally, we will be creating a “pop-up” city hall to collect ideas on how to improve the safety, comfort and activity along streets throughout Atlanta.
